2010 Summer School Class Descriptions

Art Art Exploration
Cost: $5.00 Current Grades: 3-5, 6-8
Creativity spoken here! Young artists will work with a variety of materials to design and create original works of art. Students will work with clay, watercolor, building materials and crafts.

Technology in Art
Cost: $5.00 Current Grades: 3-5, 6-8
Haven't you always wanted to make your own animated film? Come learn the basics of digital photography and green screen chromakey technology to make your movie sizzle. Your summer will be complete with YOU as the star animator in our cool claymation film festival. Hop on our claymation caravan- sign up today!

Computers Keyboarding
Cost: $2.00 Current Grades: 3-5, 6-8
Learn how to type using keyboarding software. This class will focus on learning the keys of the keyboard, proper fingering position, speed, and accuracy. What a great way to prepare for the technological future! A different program will be used for the younger students.

Technology Travelers
Cost: $2.00 Current Grades: 3-8
Want to get away? Plan an exciting trip to a dream location using the Internet, digital cameras, and productivity software. In this class students will create a brochure, passport, postcards, tickets, and an electronic scrapbook!

Critical Thinking
Puzzle Mania
Cost: $2.00 Current Grades: 6-8
Life is like a box of puzzle pieces (think - Forest Gump). You never know what you'll get. We'll build and solve various types of puzzles. If you're game, this is the place to be.
Language Arts
Language Arts
Cost: $2.00 Current Grades: 3-5, 6-8
Proficiency in basic language, grammar, and spelling skills will be developed through fun activities involving writing, speaking, and listening. Recommended students get first preference.

Writers Workshop
Cost: $2.00 Current Grades: 3-5
Sharpen your pencils and get ready to write! Awaken the writer inside of you through poetry, journaling, digital literacy and storytelling. You will be taken out of the traditional style of writing and experiment with craft, voice, and creativity. The sky is the limit! No red pens, no rubrics, no rules. Just write!

Reading Literature Circles
Cost: $10.00 Current Grades: 3-5
Summer reading is the best! Literature circles provide students with the opportunity to discuss books. You’ll improve your reading skills and have fun sharing opinions about books. This class is for students who are reading at or above grade level. Students will be able to take home the two books that were read.

Reading
Cost: $2.00 Current Grades: 3-4, 4-5, 6-7, 7-8
In this class, you will receive reinforcement of basic reading and language skills through whole-group and individual instruction. Recommended students get first preference.

Reading Enrichment
Cost: $2.00 Current Grades: 3-4, 4-5
This class focuses on higher level thinking skills and provides enriching activities to extend reading comprehension and written and oral expression.

Math Geometry Constructions
Cost: $2.00 Current Grades: 5-8
Learn how to use geometry tools to construct geometric shapes. Students will examine the vocabulary, designs, and spatial elements of geometry. Activities include using a compass, measuring, and making geometric designs.

Math Cooks
Cost: $10.00 Current Grades: 3-5
Use your developing math skills to prepare tasty treats! Scrumptious recipes will be prepared in one class period to reinforce addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication.

Math in Our World
Cost: $2.00 Current Grades: 3-5
Have you ever wondered, "Why do I have to know this?" Well, this class will help answer that question and discover that math is everywhere! Explore real life situations where math plays an important role.

Math Games
Cost: $2.00 Current Grades: 3-4, 5-6
Everyone loves to play games. What a fun way to brush up on basic math skills and learn some new ones at the same time. You can “count” on this class being fun!

Math Reinforcement
Cost: $2.00 Current Grades: 3-4, 5-6, 7-8
If you want to learn more about how numbers can really work for you, then look no further. This class will let you practice and apply everyday math skills by review, games, word problems, problem solving, and new techniques. Recommended students get first preference.

Mathematical Mystery Tour
Cost: $2.00 Current Grades: 6-8
Let this geographically alive mystery tour integrate math into art, science, philosophy, history, social studies, and language arts. The use of calculators, geometrical constructions, metric measurement, problem solving, formulating results is woven throughout the class.

Physical Education
Hunter Safety
Cost: $10.00 Current Grades: 5-8
The basic Hunter Safety course consists of a minimum of 10 hours of safety instruction. Students learn how hunting accidents are caused and how they can be prevented. Hunter responsibility and safety are stressed throughout the classes, which consist of lectures, demonstrations, group discussions, practical exercises, and individual study and activity assignments. There is a mandatory Saturday session at a local firing range.

Physical Education
Cost: $3.00 Current Grades: 3-4, 4-5, 6-7, 7-8
In Physical Education you will engage in a variety of team and individual games, with different and exciting activities planned for each day. Be sure to register early and join a winning team!

Science Science
Cost: $5.00 Current Grades: 3-5, 6-8
Do you have a little “Bill Nye” in you? Take this class and discover a world of scientific principles through fun, hands-on activities.
Social Studies
Where in the World?
Cost: $2.00 Current Grades: 3-5
Develop your geography and map reading skills by taking a little trip around the world. If you happen to get lost, at least you'll be able to find your way home. Your path may even cross with some of history's most famous people!

History Makers
Cost: $2.00 Current Grades: 6-8
Brush up on your U.S. and World History by meeting the people who were a part of it. Issac Newton, Aristotle, George Washington, or Franklin D. Roosevelt—who knows who may stop by!
