During the two week period of September 8-22, 2009, Trevor students in grades 3-8 will take tests called "Measures of Academic Progress" or MAP for short. The MAP measures student knowledge and skills in reading, language arts, mathematics and science. In particular, the test also assesses student academic growth in these same academic areas. The information the school receives from these assessments assists in personalizing learning and in school accountability.
This is the fifth year that Trevor has used the MAP tests. We administer the MAP test in the fall and spring. Having the achievement data earlier in the school year will allow more time for your child’s teacher to use the data in helping to meet your child’s needs. Second, the test publisher has extensive data on typical fall to fall growth, fall to spring growth, and spring to spring growth among national samples of students. You will be able to compare your child’s growth to this yardstick when you receive the report of this year’s scores will be able to compare your child’s growth to this yardstick.
Your child will take the tests on a computer. MAP tests are unique in that they adapt to be appropriate for your child’s level of learning. Typically, students will require about 45-60 minutes for each test. However, the tests are not timed and students may take as much time as needed. The test can be paused and resumed later with no penalty to the student if the test isn't finished during the alloted time.
You will receive a report of your child’s achievement at the November parent-teacher conferences. If you have any questions about the testing, please contact your child’s teacher or Mr. Gavlin. Thank you for your continued support of your child’s learning.
The PTO is made up of parents and staff who volunteer to take a role in enhancing the education of our children.
